FOUR LADY PIRATES SCORE IN DOUBLE FIGURE AS HAMPTON SAILS PASS FAMU, 80-72

Hampton, Va. – It was a battle in the Hampton University Convocation Center as the Lady Pirates faced the Lady Rattlers of Florida A&M University in a MEAC game on Monday. As they have done before, the Lady Pirates found a way to stay undefeated at home as they sailed past the Lady Rattlers, 80-72.
The Lady Pirates came out of the gates rolling as they started the game on a 10-0 run, but it was not long before the Lady Rattlers woke up and got back into the game. With Hampton up 16-6, FAMU went on a quick 8-0 run to get back into the game, trailing by only four points at one stage. FAMU got back into the game slowly as they tied the game up at 22 with 8:39 reminding in the half. They would gain the lead on a jumper by Joslyne Jackson to take a 36-35 lead over the Lady Pirates at intermission.
Hampton shot 39 percent (13-of-33) from the field and 54 percent (6-of-11) from the charity stripe in the first half compared to FAMU’s 54 percent from the field and 69 percent from the charity stripe.
The second half was another back-and-forth battle until 7:58 in the second half, when the Lady Pirates pulled away and never looked back. Hampton went on an 8-0 run with jumpers by Ukoh, Burns, Laura Lewis and Butler. The Lady Rattlers would pull within five, determined to walk out of Convocation with a win. However, four free throws by Burns and Roneisha Corbitt would seal the win for the Lady Pirates.
Ukoh had an impressive night, being the only Lady Pirate to have a double-double game with 10 rebounds and 13 points. Butler led the Lady Pirates in scoring with 18 points, followed by Artavia Burns with 16 points and Laura Lewis with 10 points.
The Lady Pirates will travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to take on the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State University on Saturday, January 19.
